Emergency response methods for diesel generator sets after water ingress

Emergency Handling Methods for Diesel Generator Sets After Water Ingress:

1. Do not start the engine immediately.

2. Rinse the exterior of the diesel engine with water to remove mud and debris,

then use a metal cleaner or laundry detergent to eliminate surface oil stains.

3. Lift one end of the diesel generator so that the oil drain point on the oil pan is at the lowest position.

Remove the drain plug and oil dipstick to allow the water inside the oil pan to drain out naturally.

When the oil is about to start flowing out, let a small amount of oil and water drain together before reinstalling the drain plug.

4. Remove the air filter, disassemble the upper housing, and take out the filter element and other components.

Remove all water from the filter housing and clean each part with a metal cleaner or diesel.

If the filter element is made of plastic foam, wash it with laundry detergent or soapy water, rinse thoroughly, dry,

and soak it in an appropriate amount of engine oil. New filter elements should be similarly oil-soaked before installation.

If the filter element is paper-based, replace it with a new one. After cleaning and drying all filter components, reassemble them according to specifications.

5. Remove the intake and exhaust pipes along with the muffler to drain any accumulated water inside.

Open the decompression valve and manually rotate the diesel engine to check if water is expelled from the intake and exhaust ports.

If water is present, continue rotating the crankshaft until all water is cleared from the cylinders. Reinstall the intake and exhaust pipes and the muffler.

Add a small amount of engine oil into the intake port, rotate the crankshaft several times, and then reinstall the air filter.

If the flywheel is difficult to rotate due to prolonged water exposure, it indicates rusting of the cylinder liners and piston rings.

Disassemble to remove rust, clean thoroughly, and reassemble. Severely rusted parts should be replaced promptly.

6. Remove the fuel tank and drain all oil and water from it. Check the diesel filter and fuel lines for water presence and drain if necessary.

Clean the fuel tank and diesel filter, then reinstall them. Reconnect the fuel lines and fill the tank with clean diesel.

7. Remove the alternator, inspect the stator and rotor inside, and ensure they are thoroughly dried before reassembly.

8. Drain the sewage from the radiator and water passages, clean the water passages, and refill with clean river water or

boiled well water until the water level indicator rises. Open the throttle valve and start the diesel engine. After starting,

closely observe the oil pressure indicator and listen for any abnormal noises. Check all parts for normal operation and

run the engine through a break-in process: idle for 5 minutes, followed by medium speed for 5 minutes, and then high speed for 5 minutes.

After the break-in, shut down the engine and drain the oil. Refill with fresh oil, restart the engine,

and run at medium speed for 5 minutes before resuming normal operation.
