Diesel Generator Set Maintenance Plan
Regular maintenance is essential for optimal performance of diesel generator sets, and it is key to reducing operational costs.
A diesel engine requires periodic servicing according to a maintenance schedule.
Below is the diesel generator set maintenance plan provided by Guangdong Longhong Electromechanical Equipment Co., Ltd.:
Generator Set Maintenance for Optimal Performance
Preventive maintenance is the simplest and most cost-effective approach.
It allows the maintenance department to perform tasks at appropriate intervals.
The maintenance cycles and requirements may vary slightly for different engine series and models.
Please refer to the engine maintenance manual for specific details.
Below is a brief overview of the maintenance cycles and tasks:
(1) A-Level Maintenance Inspection (Daily Check)
- Maintain a daily engine work log for the maintenance department.
① Report the following:
1) Whether oil pressure is low;
2) Whether power output is insufficient;
3) Whether coolant or oil temperature is abnormal;
4) Whether engine noise is unusual;
5) Whether there is smoke emission;
6) Whether coolant, fuel, or oil consumption is excessive;
7) Whether there are leaks of coolant, fuel, or oil.
② Inspect the engine:
1) Check the engine oil level;
2) Check the engine coolant level.
③ Inspect the water pump belt;
④ Inspect the marine gearbox;
⑤ Inspect the engine for leaks, damage, loose components, etc.
(2) A-Level Maintenance Inspection (Weekly Check)
- Repeat all daily checks weekly.
- Inspect the air filter and intake resistance: Clean or replace the air filter element.
- Drain accumulated water from the air storage tank.
- Remove sediment from the fuel tank.
(3) B-Level Maintenance Inspection
Cycle: Based on charts, 250 hours, 6 months, or 16,000 km of travel.
When performing a B-level inspection, complete all A-level inspection tasks and add the following:
1) Change engine oil:
① Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature, then shut it down and drain the oil;
② Reinstall the drain plug;
③ Use the dipstick to ensure the oil level reaches the "H" mark;
④ Start the engine and visually inspect for oil leaks;
⑤ Shut down the engine and check the oil level after 15 minutes.
2) Replace filters:
① Full-flow oil filter;
② Bypass oil filter;
③ Fuel filter.
3) Check coolant: Inspect the DCA concentration of the engine coolant. Replace the filter element and add DCA4 additive if necessary.
4) Check the oil level.
5) Clean or replace the crankcase breather and air compressor breather.
6) Check the zinc plugs.
(4) C-Level Maintenance Inspection
Cycle: 1,500 hours, 1 year, or 96,000 km of travel.
When performing a C-level inspection, complete all A-level and B-level tasks, and add the following:
- Adjust fuel injector timing and valve clearance.
① "Cold adjustment": The engine should be shut down for at least 4 hours at the ambient temperature
where the adjustment is to be performed to stabilize the temperature.
② "Hot adjustment": Run the engine for at least 10 minutes with oil temperature above 99°C,
or adjust the injectors and valves immediately after reaching normal oil temperature.
Note: Adjustments for Cummins engine injector timing and valve clearance must be performed by specially trained personnel.
(5) D-Level Maintenance Inspection
Cycle: 4,500 hours, 2 years, or 288,000 km of travel.
When performing a D-level inspection, complete all A-level, B-level, and C-level tasks, and add the following:
1) Clean and calibrate fuel injectors and fuel pumps.
2) Inspect, repair, or replace the turbocharger, vibration damper, and air compressor.
3) Repair or replace the fan hub, water pump belt tensioner assembly, and water pump.
(6) Seasonal Inspections
1) Spring:
① Steam-clean the engine;
② Tighten mounting bolts;
③ Check crankshaft axial clearance;
④ Inspect heat exchanger zinc plugs annually or as needed.
2) Autumn:
① Clean and flush the cooling system;
② Replace hoses as needed;
③ Clean electrical connections and inspect the battery.
(7) Other Inspections for Weichai Diesel Generators
- Alternator;
- Starter motor;
- Brakes;
- Air compressor;
- Electrical connections;
- Battery.
Maintenance for these electrical components should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
